Practical pet planning

Frequently Asked Questions

These answers summarize the scope of the site and point you toward the more detailed guides.

Is there one “best” pet food?

No. Appropriate food depends on species, life stage, nutritional adequacy, health, the individual animal and practical household factors. This site does not publish a single universal winner.

What does “complete and balanced” mean?

AAFCO consumer guidance explains that “complete” refers to containing required nutrients and “balanced” to those nutrients being present in appropriate ratios. Check the nutritional adequacy statement for the intended species and life stage.

Should I put dry pet food into a plastic container?

A secondary container can be convenient if it is food-contact appropriate, clean and dry. Retain the original package or lot-code information so you can identify the food if a recall occurs.

Do you recommend raw pet food?

No. CDC states that it does not recommend feeding raw pet food or treats to dogs and cats because of the risk of germs that can make pets and people sick.

Can I use the cost calculator to decide portions?

No. It only calculates cost from an amount you provide. Feeding amounts should come from appropriate label guidance and individualized veterinary advice when needed.

Do you sell pet food or supplies?

No. This is an educational publishing site. Advertising may appear, but editorial guidance is not a personalized veterinary recommendation.
