Dry food
Dry food is usually easy to portion and store, but it still needs protection from moisture, pests and heat. Keep the original product identity and lot information available even if you use a secondary container.
Canned and wet food
Wet food offers a different texture and water content and often comes in portionable cans, trays or pouches. Once opened, follow the manufacturer’s refrigeration and discard instructions rather than leaving leftovers at room temperature indefinitely.
Fresh, refrigerated and frozen products
Cold-chain products require more refrigerator or freezer space and more attention to thawing, handling and use-by directions. Cost comparisons should include realistic waste if opened portions are not always used.
Treats, toppers and complementary foods
A product that is appealing or useful as a treat is not automatically intended to replace a complete diet. Read the label for intended use and account for extras when considering the overall feeding plan.
