Pet Grooming Supplies: Practical Basics

A useful grooming kit is usually smaller than the pet-store aisle suggests.

Brushes and combs

Coat type affects which tools are useful. Choose equipment appropriate to the species and coat, and stop if grooming causes pain, skin damage or strong distress.

Nail and ear products

These tasks can injure an animal if done incorrectly. If you are unsure how to trim nails, clean ears or handle a sensitive pet, ask a veterinarian or professional groomer to demonstrate the process.

Shampoos and topical products

Use products labeled for the species. Cats and dogs can react differently to ingredients, and a product safe for one animal is not automatically safe for another.

Storage and hygiene

Clean tools according to manufacturer directions and store them dry. Do not share contaminated grooming equipment between animals without appropriate cleaning.
