Pet Food Across Life Stages

Life stage is one of the clearest reasons not to choose food from a generic “best overall” list.

Growth

Puppies and kittens are growing, and foods intended for growth are labeled accordingly. Large-breed puppy considerations can be more specific, so use veterinarian guidance rather than generic portion formulas.

Adult maintenance

Adult pets still differ by activity, body condition and health. Feeding directions provide a starting reference, while actual portions may need adjustment based on the individual animal.

Senior pets

“Senior” is not a single nutritional diagnosis. Older pets may remain healthy or may develop conditions that change dietary priorities. If an older pet loses weight, gains weight unexpectedly, changes appetite or develops a medical problem, seek veterinary guidance before making major diet changes.

Reproduction and special situations

Pregnancy, lactation, recovery from illness and therapeutic diets involve needs beyond a general consumer guide. These are appropriate situations for individualized professional advice.
